CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE: LET’S SEE WHAT THEY DO

The woman on the floor was still, calm...almost meditative as if in defiance of the situation. The office was well-lit but she couldn’t see who else was in the room due to the tie that was blindfolding her. Her hands were bound too tightly behind her, the ropes chafing and allowing the accumulating blood to slowly drip onto the back of her legs. She breathed deeply and spoke in a cool, level voice.

“Show yourself.”

She heard the ‘whoosh’ of something heavy fly just behind her head but remained unflinching as the tie slowly lowered itself, loosened by the cutting of the knot. The object responsible had buried itself into the door where it gently swayed.

“I understand why you wish to blame me for this, but I would never rob you of the chance to see the light leave my eyes.”

“Amusing how controlling you are. Even trying to claim the rights for your own execution. It would almost be impressive. Almost; if that were indeed my intention.”

The voice came from a woman sitting exclusively in black. Everything from the slick loafers, three-piece suit, shirt, tie, hat and gloves were the same careful shade as if she were merely a shadow. In one hand was an elaborate cane, the shaft of which was decorated with jade dragons that twined themselves in a helix-like pattern.

Souther quietly retrieved his knife from the door, placing it back into its sheath as the Shadow spoke again.

“No, the reason you are here today is an opportunity to redeem yourself.”

She raised her head slightly, showing off a gleaming toothy grin. The rest of her face remained obscured by the wide brim of the hat which quickly claimed the smile as well.

“All you have to do is free yourself; show me what I needed to see days ago and I will forgive your little oversight. I’ve graciously gifted you with vision; after all, you should be able to make it look easy.”

The grin returned again, this time wider and more perverted, as she watched the woman with interest.

Slowly and deliberately the bound woman staggered to her feet, unable to use her arms for balance before stepping over her hands. The blood on her legs that hadn’t congealed resumed its course down to her feet but she bore it no mind as she calmly used her teeth to pick apart one end of the knot, testing her hands every few seconds to see if she could free them.

The Shadow didn’t seem to change her position or expression as the woman attacked her binding. Souther watched in silence. He forced himself to breathe deeply in order to try and stop his heart from thundering despite the apparent simplicity of the task. He hadn’t expected this, especially the boss so readily revealing both of them to this woman – his superior officer. He didn’t know the full story but that wasn’t his job. He was here for hands-on security while Ben was the guard dog for today.
